1770: the "Boston Massacre" took place (see History Spotlight below). 


1821: James Monroe became the first President of the United States to be inaugurated on March 5th. The reason? The usual inauguration date of March 4th fell on a Sunday that year and a President cannot be inaugurated on the Sabbath. It’s still the law, even though the Inauguration Day was officially set back to January 20th (Read more).


1922: Annie Oakley broke all existing records for women’s trap shooting (Bio)





1946: Winston Churchill delivered his famous "Iron Curtain Speech" in Fulton, Missouri (Read more). 

1953: Soviet leader Joseph Stalin died at the age of 73.  
1960: Elvis Presley returned to civilian life following two-years of service in the U.S. Army. 
1963: country singers Patsy Cline, Cowboy Copas and Hankshaw Hawkins were killed in a plane crash near Nashville, Tennessee. 
1970: "Airport" premiered at Radio City Music Hall. 
1977: President Jimmy Carter participated in the first-ever "Dial-a-President" radio talk show.  The program was carried on 260 CBS Radio Network stations. 


1982: actor, comedian John Belushi died of a drug overdose at the age of 33.  He starred in several popular projects including the television show "Saturday Night Live" and the films "Blues Brothers" and "Animal House"  (Blues Brothers--Everybody Needs Somebody

1983: Michael Jackson topped the pop singles chart with "Billie Jean"  (Video)


1985: Mike Bossy of the New York Islanders became the first National Hockey League player to score 50 goals in eight consecutive seasons. 
1992: the Rodney King beating trial opened in Simi Valley, California

1997: former Los Angeles Dodgers manager Tom Lasorda was elected to the Baseball Hall-of-Fame. 
1997: North Korea and South Korea met for first time 25 years to talk peace.


2002: the reality series "The Osbournes" starring heavy metal icon Ozzy Osbourne made its debut on MTV.  The series followed the day-to-day activities of the rocker, his wife Sharon and their two teenage children Kelly and Jack. 
2004: a New York jury found home living guru Martha Stewart guilty on all four charges related to her ImClone stock sale.  Stewart and her broker maintained the stock sale was agreed to based on an earlier, previously established sale price.  However, prosecutors said Stewart sold after receiving a tip. 
2012: the viral video hit "Kony 2012" was released on this date.  Created by the group Invisible Children, the 29-minute documentary called for action in the efforts to capture Ugandan warlord Joseph Kony.  The video logged more than 50 million views worldwide within the first four days of its release.

The Boston Massacre (Source)


The Boston Massacre was the killing of five colonists by British regulars on March 5, 1770. It was the culmination of tensions in the American colonies that had been growing since Royal troops first appeared in Massachusetts in October 1768 to enforce the heavy tax burden imposed by the Townshend Acts.
