1837: Michigan became the 26th state of the Union.
1863: 25 days after President Abraham Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation, the U.S. War Department authorized the enlistment of Black troops. The authorization gave rise to the 54th Regiment of Massachusetts Volunteer infantry which became the first all-Black Union regiment raised in the north.
1875: the electric dental drill was patented by George Green of Kalamazoo, Michigan.
1905: the world's largest diamond was discovered and named the Cullinan diamond (See History Spotlight)
1932: businessman William Wrigley, Jr., died at the age of 70. He founded the Wrigley chewing gum empire and also baseball's Chicago Cubs. (Read more)
1934: New York's Apollo Theater opened. It became a showplace for many great black entertainers.
1947: "The Greatest Story Ever Told" was first heard on ABC Radio. The program was the first to portray the voice of Jesus Christ on radio.
1960: Pete Rozelle was elected commissioner of the National Football League. He held the job for more than 25 years.
1979: "The Dukes of Hazzard" debuted on CBS (Show Open).
1980: Prince made his television debut on Dick Clark's "American Bandstand."
1986: the Chicago Bears beat the New England Patriots 46-to-10 to win Super Bowl 20.
1987: Coca-Cola was named the number one soft drink in America.
2003: the Tampa Bay Buccaneers won their first Super Bowl championship, defeating the Oakland Raiders, 48-21: to win Super Bowl 37 at Qualcomm Stadium in San Diego.
2005: the Senate confirmed Condoleezza Rice as Secretary of State by an 85-13 vote.
2006: on her talk show, Oprah Winfrey confronted author James Frey, a man she says "duped" her. Frey confessed to Oprah that his best-selling memoir, "A Million Little Pieces," was filled with several inaccuracies. Frey's book was the number-two best seller 2005: due in large part to the publicity brought on by Oprah's Book Club.

Largest gem-quality diamond ever found (Source)
On this day in 1905, miners in South Africa unearthed the Cullinan diamond, the largest gem-quality diamond ever discovered.
The Cullinan diamond, a whopping 3,106 carats and weighing about 621 grams (1.4 pounds), was cut into nine stones. The largest, nicknamed Cullinan I or the “Great Star of Africa,” is 530 carats. Today, the Great Star of Africa sits at the top of a scepter, part of the Crown Jewels of the United Kingdom.

Today is Bubble Wrap Appreciation Day! In the late 1950s, an American engineer named Al Fielding and a Swiss inventor named Marc Chavannes created Bubble Wrap. They were actually trying to come up with a textured, plastic wallpaper, but soon realized that their product had huge potential as a packaging material. (Source)
